GREENVILLE — Firefighters from four area fire departments battled a Sunday fire believed to have started around 10:30 a.m. in the basement of a home at 11491 W. Carson City Road (M-57).

Sgt. Dennis Magirl with the Greenville Department of Public Safety said the fire spread from the basement to the first level of the home, causing significant damage to both levels.

One resident was home at the time of the fire, smelled smoke coming from the basement and called 911.

Fire personnel had to return to the fire at around 8 p.m. after it had rekindled.

Magirl said the cause of the fire is unknown, as authorities will need to wait until the home cools and they can pump out three feet of standing water in the basement.

Assisting Greenville were Lakeview District, Montcalm Township and Belding fire departments.
