MOUNT PLEASANT — For the first time in five years, the Greenville Yellow Jackets wrestling team will not be ending its season at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
On Wednesday night, Bay City Western revenged last year’s regional final loss (45-19) with a 32-25 Division 2 regional final victory over the Yellow Jackets in Mount Pleasant.
It will be Bay City Western’s first trip to Battle Creek since 2002.
“I’m a little disappointed, but what do you do,” Greenville coach Paul Johnson said. “The first one went the way we hoped (33-30 win over Gaylord), but the last one went almost exactly the way I had played it out.
“We got the bonus points I thought we needed, but in order to win the match the flip of the coin was a big deal,” he added.
The flip of the coin allowed the Warriors to set up the final match with one of their best wrestlers. With the match expected to be tight to the finish, the coin flip was “significant” according to Johnson.
“Had we won the flip, they would have had to put their kid on the mat first at 140,” Johnson said. “They wanted to see what we would do with Will (Parmelee). We put our kid at 140 and they were able to put out another wrestler, but one not as strong as they would have put out if Will wrestled.
“So having a kid (Tom Schoenherr) like that to finish with is great,” he added.
After three matches the score was tied 5-5. Greenville’s Alec Ward (145) and Jake Hopkins (152) both earned decisions, while Bay City’s Jacob Wibert started the match with a technical fall. Greenville lost a team point because of an unsportsmanlike penalty following the Hopkins match.
The two teams traded wins over the next four matches.
Greenville’s Reed Cox (160) and Luke Bontrager (171) both won by major decisions. Bay City, though won by pin and decision for a 14-13 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead with back-to-back pins by Cole Antcliff (285) and Tren Bartrum (103) for a 25-14 lead. Antcliff pinned Cody Witzgall in just 12 seconds.
Bay City Western, known to be strong at the lower weights, won the final five matches for the win.
“We wrestled well. We didn’t wrestle poorly,” Johnson said. “But what is hard, is we have been here four years and we didn’t have that hunger. It’s not they didn’t want to win, it’s the other team had the extra motivation. They (Western) have not been there in a long time.”
Greenville trailed 29-25 when Parmelee met Tom Schoenherr. Schoenherr is ranked No. 4 at 135 by michigangrappler.com, while Parmelee is ranked No. 6 at 130. Schoenherr won the match 8-2.
“Congratulations to them. They are a good team and best of luck to them at the state finals,” Johnson said.
In the semifinal match against Gaylord, the Yellow Jackets split the first two matches with decisions, but reeled off four straight pins by Ward, Hopkins, Cox and Bontrager.
Perhaps the biggest win of the night came at 189. Greenville’s Teagan Boni pulled off the upset over No. 4 ranked Shane Foster 9-3. That win gave Greenville a 30-3 advantage.
Cole Antcliff sealed the Yellow Jackets win with a decision two matches later.
Bay City Western will wrestle again on Feb. 21 in the state quarterfinals. Greenville’s regular season is over for the team, but eight individuals will compete Saturday at the individual regional tournament at Bay City Western.
