BELDING — Belding’s boys basketball team dominated Montabella in the first half of their game Tuesday night, and it led to a win.
The Redskins picked up just their fifth win of the season when they beat the Mustangs 66-36.
That first half saw Belding (5-12) outscore Montabella 39-15.
“We came out with an idea we wanted to press,” Belding coach Jeff Wierzbicki said. “That was able to pick up the pace of the game which led to some easy baskets. Montabella then went into a zone and between Kole Hart and Nick Price they hit five three-pointers.”
The Mustangs were able to keep up with the Redskins in the third quarter with a 12-12 tie.
“It was a very even third quarter,” Wierzbicki said. “Montabella came out and scored the first eight points in the quarter. That took us by surprise.”
But Wierzbicki had an easy fix for that.
“Then we put in the half court press and that put it in our pace and our style of game. We were able to finish it out.”
The Redskins had four players in double figures. Price led Belding with 16 points, including four three-pointers. Hart added 13 and Tye Wittenbach and Garrett Strotheide added 12 each.
“Of those four guys, they had games like this before,” Wierzbicki said. “If we can be more consistent and have four guys in double figures we will be a hard team to beat.”
Brady Burggren led Montabella with nine points and Tyler House and Peter Taylor had eight each for 25 of the 36 Mustang points.
Belding will finish O-K Blue Conference play Friday when they go to Coopersville while the Mustangs are back in action Friday at home against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in a Mid-State Activities Conference game.
