JUST IN: Good Samaritan struck and killed near Trufant

MAPLE VALLEY TOWNSHIP – An elderly man was trying to help a stranded motorist Friday morning near Trufant, when the man was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle.

The Michigan State Police Lakeview Post responded to the incident in the area of Stanton Road and Johnson Road around 11:05 a.m.

According to police, Darwin Richards, 81, of Grand Rapids, had exited his vehicle to assist another motorist who was attempting to help yet another motorist whose vehicle was stuck in the roadway.

A 48-year-old man was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Stanton Road and struck Richards.

Richards was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The Lakeview District Fire Department, Maple Valley Township Fire Department and Montcalm County Emergency Services & Rescue all assisted at the scene.

The investigation is still being conducted and a report will be forwarded to the Montcalm County Prosecutor’s Office in Stanton.

The Michigan State Police would like to remind everyone that if a vehicle becomes stuck on the roadway or in a ditch, please call 911 and allow law enforcement and professional wrecker services to respond to and assist the disabled vehicle.
