BUSHNELL TOWNSHIP — Three people are in critical condition after suffering injuries sustained in a two-vehicle head-on crash this morning on W. Carson City Road (M-57) just east of M-66.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the accident between Town Hall and Castle roads.
According to Trooper Ed Brinkman of the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post, two men from Sumner were traveling westbound toward Greenville in a 2005 Saturn Ion when the vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound 2010 Ford Fusion, driven by a woman from Greenville.
Brinkman said the accident occurred in the eastbound lane, but the cause of the crash is unknown and remains under investigation.
“It appears that we had a collision in the eastbound lane,” he said. “As to the cause of the accident, we are looking at the westbound car, which came into the eastbound lane for an unknown reason.
“No alcohol was involved,” he added.
The names of those involved in the accident are not being released at this time.
Brinkman said the passenger of the Saturn, a 20-year old man of Sumner, was airlifted by AeroMed, which landed in a nearby church parking lot, to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where the man remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Saturn, a 17-year-old teenager of Sumner, was transported to Sheridan Community Hospital by ambulance and is listed in critical but stable condition.
The driver of the Ford Fusion, a 54-year-old woman of Greenville, was transported to Carson City Hospital by ambulance and is listed in critical but stable condition.
“There is a chance the woman may need to be flown by AeroMed to Grand Rapids,” Brinkman noted.
Brinkman said speed was not a factor in the accident, and it is believed that all occupants were wearing seatbelts.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Michigan State Police at (989) 352-8444.
The Sheridan Community Fire Department, Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office and Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services assisted on scene.
