JUST IN: Boy shows improvement after near-drowning in Douglass Township

DOUGLASS TOWNSHIP — A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday after his father found him unresponsive in a pond behind the family’s home.

The boy was initially taken to Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital in Lakeview and was later airlifted to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he was listed in critical condition.

Hoever, his condition was upgraded this morning from critical to serious.

Lt. Kevin Sweeney with the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post said the incident appears to have been accidental.

At approximately 5:37 p.m. Friday, troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview post responded to a residence in Douglass Township. The child had been in the pond for an undetermined amount of time before he was found by his father.

The boy was not breathing and his father initiated resuscitation.  When troopers arrived on scene, the child was breathing on his own.
