RICHLAND TOWNSHIP — A 61-year-old Vestaburg man is in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck while the man was picking up cans along the roadway.

The Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, which occurred on Howard City-Edmore Road (M-46) near Bollinger Road in Richland Township shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies determined that an eastbound 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by a 62-year-old Mason man struck the Vestaburg man, who was in the roadway.

The Vestaburg man had been picking up cans along the edge of the road when he suddenly ran across the road without first checking for traffic, according to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.

The pedestrian was transported to Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma and was later flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw by Flight Care where he is reported to be in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup and his 57-year-old female passenger were not injured.

Assisting at the scene were the Michigan State Police, the Richland Township Fire Department and Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services.
