BELDING — Belding’s boys golf team came oh-so-close to beating Comstock Park.
The Redskins shot a team score of 171 at the O-K Blue Conference jamboree they hosted Monday at Candlestone Golf and Resort. That was just two strokes short of the Panthers, who carded a team score of 169.
“Best round of the season for sure,” Belding coach Doug Anderson said. “Home course helps you in golf.”
Missing Comstock Park by just a couple of strokes is “huge for us,” Anderson said.
“They (Comstock Park) are a tough team to get close to,” he said. “That (Monday’s round) is the highlight of the season so far.”
Belding got some big contributions from Nick Badder and Carter Kemmis. Both shot a 40, which was second-lowest score of the day behind Nick VanOust of the Panthers, who had a 39.
“Great rounds for them from the blues (tees) out here,” Anderson said of Badder and Kemmis. “Playing more than 3,300 yards, it’s the longest course we play all season.”
Anderson believes the 40s were a season low for both players.
Grant Hansen added a 41 and Josh Howard carded a 50 on the front nine at Candlestone.
Other team scores from the meet were 182 from Coopersville, 185 from Sparta and Allendale turned in a 192.
Anderson believes the good round Monday can carry over to the rest of the season.
“This helps a bunch,” he said. “It’s showing they (Belding) are going back to practice and playing. A round like this can really help.”
Belding will go to another O-K Blue jamboree Wednesday when the teams go to Allendale.
