OAKFIELD TOWNSHIP — A 53-year-old Grand Rapids man died Saturday of an apparent drowning when his boat capsized on Chain Lakes.

Charles Cooley and his wife were fishing in a small aluminum row boat on Chain Lakes when Cooley shifted positions in the boat, causing it to capsize, a press release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Both occupants fell into the water. The two of them tried to get back into the boat, but Cooley went under water and never surfaced.

The wife grabbed a flotation device, swam to shore, and found a neighbor to call for help.
