PINE TOWNSHIP — An Amish community’s saw mill at the 6000 block of Kendaville Road was completely destroyed this morning by a fire believed to be ignited by a lightning strike.

“Several of them reported hearing a big crack and got up to close the window and saw the saw mill on fire,” Lakeview District Fire Department Chief Patrick Carr said.

The approximate 40-by-100-feet structure, owned by Levi Yoder, and all of the equipment inside was a complete loss, he said.

Fire crews from Lakeview District, Montcalm Township, Stanton Community and Maple Valley Township fire departments arrived at the fire shortly before 3:30 a.m. today and were on scene for about five hours.

Several Amish families lived in the area, but no one was injured.
