FERRIS TOWNSHIP — A large barn at 1250 N. Douglas Road was destroyed this morning by a fire believed to have been caused by lightning.

Fire Chief Lonny Fitzpatrick of the Crystal Township Fire Department said it is believed the 36-by-60-foot barn was struck by lightning about 2 a.m.

The barn is considered a complete loss and some equipment in an adjacent building was damaged.

“There wasn’t much housed in the barn itself,” he said. “But there was a little granary next to it that had some equipment in it.”

Owner Don Stearns could not be reached for comment.

Crews from five area fire departments battled the blaze for nearly six hours. Assisting Crystal Township were Carson City, Ithaca, Richland Township and Day Township fire departments.
