Football

CC-Crystal 47, Houghton Lake 6: The Eagles opened their season with a road win Thursday night. Dallas O’Green had three touchdowns, Tabor Erskin had two and Garrett Tabor and Shane Wiggins had one each. O’Green led the rushing with 156 yards on nine carries, while quarterback Zach Pringle added six completions in 10 tries for 91 yards and a score. Record: 1-0. Next game: at home against Byron Sept. 5.

Montabella 52, Saugatuck 22: The Mustangs opened coach Shaun Balhorn’s second tour of duty with a win Thursday night. Brady Burggren rushed for 197 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns, Joey Durham added 116 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, and Zack Taubitz rushed 14 times for 90 yards and a score. Pete Taylor, Dan Cutler and Tommy Wisner had 11 tackles each, with Cutler collecting three turnovers. Record: 1-0. Next game: at Onekama Sept. 5.

Breckenridge 30, Vestaburg 13: The Wolverines committed three turnovers which hurt their cause against the Huskies Thursday night. Jason Mertens ran 19 times for 135 yards and a touchdown while Jared Hilden ran 15 times for 117 yards and a touchdown. Kristian Gostomski led the defense with 11 tackles, while Mertens added seven. Record: 0-1. Next game: at home against Pinconning Sept. 5.

Volleyball

CC-Crystal second at Fulton: The Eagles finished second to MSAC rival Ashley at the Fulton Invitational Thursday, losing to the Bears 25-21, 18-25, 15-13 in the final. CC-Crystal won their first four pool play matches against Ovid-Elsie, Webberville, Breckenridge and the host Pirates before splitting with Ashley in pool play. That was still good enough to finish with the top seed. The Eagles then beat Fulton 25-15, 26-24 before the Bears won. Hailey Gregory led with 57 kills and 12 aces, Katlyn Dailey added 126 assists and Sierra Assemany had 69 digs. Record: 6-2-3. Next match: at the Webberville Invitational Sept. 6.

Golf

Greenville fifth, Central 10th, Tri County 12th: The Yellow Jackets shot a 379 while the Green Hornets shot a 433 and the Vikings scored 478 at the Big Rapids Invitational Thursday. Davison shot a school record 322 to win, followed by Spring Lake with 335 and Grand Rapids Catholic Central with 361. Greenville got an 89 from Karli Didion, a 94 from Amanda Kerschen and 98s from Taylor Hansen and Rylee Zayler. Tri County got a 111 from Nikki Minard, a 113 from Hannah Drouin, a 119 from Julia Bice and a 135 from Kelsey Geers. Central’s scores were Samantha Kirk with a 98, Tawny Graves with a 99, Sophie Villet with a 108 and Nicole Conover with a 128. Next matches: Greenville is at the O-K Bronze jamboree Sept. 8, Central is at the CSAA jamboree at Tri County Sept. 9, Tri County is at Cedar Springs Wednesday.

Cross Country

CC-Crystal sixth, sixth in Ithaca: The Eagles ran in the first-ever Yellowjacket Invitational Thursday and came away with just two medalists. As a team the boys scored 140, with Kolton Kavanagh medaling with a 17th-place finish (18:25.1), Cody Flinn in 22nd (18:36.6), Bailey Lance in 42nd (19:44.1), Chase Wadle in 49th (20:15.1) and Matt Stewart in 80th (23:49.8). For the girls, who were sixth with 142 points, Kaitlin Beyer medaled with a sixth-place finish (19:29.6), followed by Karagan Kavanagh in 29th (22:37.1), Makayla Baker in 37th (24:06.5), Denielle Sanborn in 41st (25:37.3) and Claire Hubbell in 50th (27:32.1). Next meet: at the Ovid-Elsie Invitational Wednesday.
