STANTON — After two failed motions, the third time was the charm for an appeal for a county dog kennel license this morning.
Dawn Thurwachter of Edmore appeared before the Montcalm County Board of Commissioners Law Enforcement & Courts Committee along with her attorney, Matthew Anderson of Wixom, to appeal a denial of a dog kennel license by Montcalm County Animal Control officials.
According to Animal Control Director Angela Sova Hollinshead, Thurwachter’s request for a kennel license was denied because Thurwachter keeps some of her dogs in the basement of her house. Hollinshead says this is against county ordinance which requires a kennel to be located elsewhere than a human dwelling.
After one motion died due to no support and another motion deadlocked 2-2, commissioners voted 3-1 to recommend the full board grant Thurwachter’s appeal and give her a kennel license. Commissioners also voted to revisit the county’s kennel ordinance at a meeting in September.
The full board will vote on the kennel appeal recommendation during the regular meeting at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 24.
