BUSHNELL TOWNSHIP — An 8-year-old Mennonite girl was seriously injured Monday afternoon when the horse-drawn buggy in which she was riding with her three sisters was struck by a pickup truck.

According to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, the girls were riding on East Boyer Road at about 3:24 p.m. and turning north onto Town Hall Road when their buggy was struck by a truck, which was headed northbound. The truck was driven by a 47-year-old Fenwick woman.

All four passengers in the buggy were ejected onto the roadway. Three received minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene. The 8-year-old passenger, however, sustained a head injury and was airlifted to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The driver of the pickup was uninjured.

The horse, which escaped at the time of the accident, was later recovered unharmed.

The crash remains under investigation by the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.
