CRYSTAL TOWNSHIP — Members of the Crystal Township Board may soon have a proposal in front of them to accept dedicated police coverage through a contract with the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.

During Wednesday evening’s Crystal Township Board meeting, Township Supervisor Chris Johnston updated members of the board on talks the Sheriff’s Office.

According to Johnston, discussions have centered around a one-year contract for a deputy to cover the township at 40 hours a week at a cost of approximately $75,000.

Johnston said the township has enough funding from its previously passed police millage to fund a year’s worth of coverage, however, anything beyond that would require an additional ballot proposal to be approved by voters.

As recently as this past summer, the township contracted with the Sheriff’s Office for dedicated coverage over the summer months, but at the request of members of the community, township officials are now seeking year-round coverage.
