STANTON — New Stanton Mayor Larry Petersen oversaw a contentious nearly three-hour long Stanton City Commission meeting Tuesday night.

Petersen had to answer to residents who voiced their desire to have a full-time city manager as well as commissioners who voiced the same desire.

Commissioner Ken Burris also requested that $3,000 be returned to the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), which was used to pay for police protection, the Department of Public Works and other office expenses.

Treasurer Janet Davis explained that until taxable value increases in the city, no money will be captured for the DDA. Burris still requested the money be paid to the DDA.

Burris and Jane Basom were reelected to serve Stanton and were sworn in along with new Commissioner John Seaman, who ran as a write-in candidate during last week’s election.

Seaman nominated Burris to fill the position as mayor pro-tem. He was elected so unanimously.
