MAKING THE GRADE: A more productive vision of education

Readers of this column will not be surprised to hear me say that I am not a fan of standardized testing. Of course, I believe we need to assess the work of students and of course, I believe we must hold teachers accountable for their work. But I have long believed that the obsession with testing for the purpose of punishing teachers is off the mark. And I have found someone who agrees and says it much more eloquently than I.

Orange flags that line M-57 outside of Greenville detail the track in which underground cables for communications company AT&T is installing new service cables. The project is part of $1.7 million invested in bettering local networks in Michigan.

It’s hard not to notice the streak of small orange flags lined along M-57, west of Greenville, flapping in the wind.

Stanton’s water goes from yellow to mellow

Water is supposed to be clear, at least the stuff you pour into a glass. But for a long time, in the city of Stanton, that wasn’t always the case. Old, rusting water mains, some laid down during the Eisenhower administration, often turned the city’s water an unappetizing, though essentially harmless, shade of yellow or brown.
