THE REVIEW: Blashill ready for third season with Griffins

It was a moment that will be remembered by West Michigan hockey fans for years to come. Seventeen years following the decision by the DeVos and Van Andel families to bring hockey to Grand Rapids, the city watched as the Grand Rapids Griffins prepared to close out game six of the 2013 Calder Cup Championship against the Syracuse Crunch in Syracuse, New York.

Gowen homicide victim ID’d

Police have identified a Gowen man who was shot, stabbed and left to die in the street early Monday morning. Brent Luttrell, 34, was found dead alongside the road after an early morning home invasion at his home on Pinewood Street.

Central Montcalm falls in heartbreaker 30-29

Central Montcalm broke open a tie game by capitalizing on two fourth-down, fourth-quarter gambles Friday night and appeared to be on its way to a 2-0 start before Clio stunned the Hornets with its own version of fourth-and-a-miracle. The Hornets had a 15-point lead with just 2:10 remaining in the game before Clio turned the tables by scoring two touchdowns — including one with no time remaining on the clock — to pull off an improbable 30-29 victory at Central Montcalm.

Belding holds off Vikings in home opener

The Belding football team waited through a 90-minute rain delay Friday night before taking the field for its home opener against Lakewood. Despite the delay, the night ended on a positive for the Redskins as they walked off the turf at Rudness Field with a 22-14 victory. Although pleased with the effort of his players, Belding coach Joe Schwander said he is looking for his team to improve their execution going forward.
