MONTCALM TOWNSHIP – Three people were seriously injured Saturday in a three-car accident on South Greenville Road (M-91) north of Sidney Road.
A black Saturn Aura driven by 17-year old Montana Crawford was stopped on South Greenville Road waiting to turn into his residence when he was rear-ended by a white Dodge Stratus driven by 16-year old Derek Jeffery, according to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.
Jeffery’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane after the initial impact and was struck by a third vehicle, driven by Beth Puiet.
Jeffery’s Stratus caught fire after impact, but everyone was able to exit the vehicle. The Montcalm Township Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
Two passengers riding with Jeffery were transported by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services to Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville. Mackenzie Oberlin, 14, later was transferred to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious injuries.
All other passengers in Jeffery’s vehicle were treated and released from United Hospital.
Neither Crawford or Puiet were injured in the crash.
Police believe everyone was wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not a factor in the crash.
