SIDNEY TOWNSHIP —  A Derby Lake home was destroyed in a fire early this morning while the owner was about 90 miles away.
Stanton Community Fire Department responded to 704 Sunset Avenue at 5:38 a.m. today.
“The fire burned quite a while before we were dispatched,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dawayne Peterman. “It’s a total loss. It was hard to get to because the floors were gone.”
Crystal Township Fire Department, Montcalm Township Fire Department and Sheridan Community Fire Department were called in to assist.
“It was a team effort,” said Sheridan firefighter Ed Lingeman of battling the blaze.
Peterman wasn’t able to locate homeowner James Holzwart until a few hours after the fire. He said Holzwart was at his other home in Bay City.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The home is insured. An investigation continues.
