With the general election right around the corner on Nov. 6, state legislators used Monday’s one-hour Legislative Luncheon at Montcalm Community College to update and inform those in attendance on six ballot proposals that voters will decide.

Two candidates for 70th District State House representative are known for pointing out the differences in their respective political platforms. But Mike Huckleberry, D-Greenville, and State Rep. Rick Outman, R-Six Lakes, have something in common — both are local business owners and both have had financial difficulties.

Montcalm County Prosecutor Andrea Krause will remain in her position after winning Tuesday’s Republican primary. Krause, who will now enter her fourth term in office, received 3,577 votes against challenger Ronald Finegood, who received 1,780 votes. She faces no opposition in November’s general election.

Money and experience were the two touchstones in the race for the Republican nomination for Montcalm County drain commissioner, but when the dust settled Tuesday, Sandy Raines — currently serving as chief deputy drain commissioner — came away with the win.

Primary election results rolled in Tuesday night after a day at the polls for Montcalm County residents. Montcalm County commissioner winners in Republican primaries were Dale Reyburn, Tom Lindeman, Ron Braman and Steve DeWitt.

A Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services millage will be up for renewal in the Aug. 7 primary election. Voters will be asked whether to approve renewing 0.75 mills over three years to provide funds for maintenance and operations of ambulance and medical first response services from 2013 to 2016.

Behind the rhetoric, finances and experience are the top two hot topics being addressed by Sandy Raines and Dennis Lance, the two Republican candidates for Montcalm County drain commissioner. The two will face off in the Aug. 7 primary election. The winner will face off against Shane Jacobs, a Democrat from Howard City, in the Nov. 6 general election.

The longtime Montcalm County prosecutor is being challenged by an attorney. Andrea Krause and Ronald Finegood, both Republicans, are facing off in the Aug. 7 primary election.

Eight Republican candidates are running for four contested positions on the Montcalm County Board of Commissioners.
