Money and experience were the two touchstones in the race for the Republican nomination for Montcalm County drain commissioner, but when the dust settled Tuesday, Sandy Raines — currently serving as chief deputy drain commissioner — came away with the win.

Primary election results rolled in Tuesday night after a day at the polls for Montcalm County residents. Montcalm County commissioner winners in Republican primaries were Dale Reyburn, Tom Lindeman, Ron Braman and Steve DeWitt.

Carson City-Crystal’s football team started full team practices Monday, and coach Jason Gray already likes what he sees. Gray noted there were 23 players on the varsity football team this season, which is the most he’s had since becoming a coach of the Eagles.

Garner Cusack played a lot of baseball this summer. But now he’s ready for some football. Cusack had been playing baseball for an under-16 team that went to Michigan State University for the Capitol City Tournament. But now he is focused on the gridiron.

An elderly Crystal man reported missing Tuesday was located later that evening by police in Saginaw County.

The Montcalm County Administrative Building was packed Monday as standing-room-only hopefuls vied to get their hands on one of 100+ foreclosed properties, but only three dozen people walked out of the old courthouse with a deed. Marty Spaulding, general manager of Title Check in Kalamazoo, acted as the day’s auctioneer. More than half the people in the audience were first-time participants in a foreclosure auction, so Spaulding spent more than half an hour reviewing how a foreclosure auction works.

A local man is facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting her and four of her friends. Michael Jones, 45, of Belding, is charged with two counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, one count of assault and one count of home invasion. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
