The Greenville High School baseball program recently received multiple grants from the Greenville Area Community Foundation. Grants totaling $20,000 helped varsity coach Mike Rasmussen purchase equipment and upgrade facilities that will not only benefit the high school, but also other organizations that use the high school baseball complex.

Two teenagers allegedly broke into an Edmore car wash Tuesday and stole money. Montcalm County Sheriff’s officers are investigating the breaking and entering at the Edmore Car Wash on Main Street in downtown Edmore.

A sidewalk project is under way in Greenville and is expected to last until mid-July. According to John Richard, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, a sidewalk ramp upgrade started June 15.

As the summer driving season heats up, there has been much recent debate concerning the new law which allows Michigan motorcyclists to go helmetless under certain conditions. Opponents have labeled it as a bad idea which will cost all Michigan taxpayers in the long run, while proponents contend that the old law was an infringement of personal freedom.

Members of the Belding Area Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to approve a 2012-2013 budget resolution for the district’s general fund and food service. According to Finance Director Adrienne Barna, the projected expenditures in next year’s budget total $17,705,633 with $16,940,660 in revenues, leaving a deficit of next year’s budget at approximately $764,973.

Montcalm County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a smash and grab break-in at a local business. A burglar broke into Burning Scent-Sations at 8899 E. Peck Road the night of June 1 or the morning of June 2. Grainy black and white video footage shows a masked burglar busting through a window, smashing glass display cases and stuffing items into a backpack — all in less than one minute.

A Howard City-area home burned to the ground Monday morning after a lightning strike from a thunderstorm hit the residence. According to Howard City Fire Chief Randy Heckman, it is believed a work ladder leading up to the roof of the home helped attract the lightning strike, which occurred around 10 a.m. at 10815 Maple Hill Road north of M-46.
