The Greenville and Stanton communities are mourning the loss of a young man. Bruce “Tal” Bretzke III, 17, died unexpectedly Saturday night or Sunday morning at his home in Stanton. He was the son of Bruce and Kelly Bretzke.

Four Greenville High School basketball players will have the opportunity to play in a high school all-star game. The recent graduates will take part in the Champions of Character All-star Basketball games on Thursday at Cornerstone University.

How does a downtown median sound? Whaddya think? Greenville’s Downtown Development Authority is taking a second look at putting a median in a couple of blocks of Lafayette Street.

A tower near the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office was apparently struck by lightning this morning. “It scared the bejeebers out of us,” said Central Dispatch Director Tim Scott.

While boaters and campers where enjoying Wabasis Lake on Saturday, more than 110 children and 12 volunteer pilots enjoyed the same lake from an eagle’s view. “We flew over Wabasis Lake,” said 12-year-old Gabriel Eastman of Belding.”

She did not win the top title, but Audrey Frank was still beaming following the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant in downtown Muskegon late Saturday night. Frank, Miss Danish Festival 2011, won the Congeniality Award, worth a $500 scholarship.

This year’s Lakeview Summerfest, held Friday and Saturday, featured live music, a beer tent, a 5K run, kids games, a parade and dozens of other activities. Summerfest has grown steadily over the past 15 years and now rivals festivals held throughout the area. Though an afternoon thunderstorm diminished the crowds somewhat Saturday afternoon, revelers were back in full force by the time the beer tent got rolling in the early evening.

The health officer of the Mid-Michigan District Health Department has issued an order declaring the designer drugs known as synthetic marijuana and the poisons known as “bath salts” a threat to public health. This order enables local law enforcement to order people to stop selling these drugs and to remove them from store shelves, and to confiscate the drugs if necessary. The order applies to Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm counties.
