Bill Simpson Jr. is no stranger to hard work. Since middle school, he’s been putting in regular work days, at first just doing odd jobs; cleaning, yard work, washing cars. The difference between Simpson and most kids his age is this: he was doing these chores for his father’s business, Simpson Family Funeral Homes.

Slocum honored at annual Spectrum Health Charity Ball

Despite frigid temperatures Saturday, a crowd of more than 300 came out to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park to support Carolyn “Skeet” Slocum as she received this year’s Fred and Lena Meijer Spirit of Caring Award. The evening marks the largest fundraising undertaking for Spectrum Health United and Kelsey Hospitals each year. Proceeds for the Charity Ball benefit the renovation of existing areas in Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville to establish a cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Individual wrestlers advance to regional tournament

The Michigan High School Athletic Association individual wrestling tournament started with districts around the state on Saturday. In all, 36 wrestlers from seven area schools advanced through districts to the regional tournament.

My friend Gary and I were fishing on a lake over by Ludington, and we’d been having some success by landing a few northern pike, when suddenly something grabbed my line and took off like there was no tomorrow! The ice was glassy and see-through in some areas, and Gary shouted as he looked down near one of his tip-ups, “Wow! I believe you’ve got a submarine on! This fish is about five feet long and easily a hundred pounds!”

Medical condition may have led to crash

A Crystal man was injured in a one-vehicle crash on Friday afternoon. Montcalm County sheriff’s deputies responded to the one-car crash at approximately 4:21 p.m. on Carson City Road (M-57) near Collins Road in Fairplains Township. The incident was originally called in as a reckless driver with reports of the vehicle traveling at varying speeds within both eastbound and westbound lanes nearly causing multiple crashes.
