Four fire departments worked together Monday to battle a fire that destroyed a Howard City-area home and nearly all the contents inside. According to Amble Fire Capt. Jason Schuitema, flames were showing when the department arrived at 8190 N. Bailey Road just south of M-46 around 12:23 p.m.
They needed two games and extra innings, but in the end, RJ’s Sports Bar accomplished its goal and captured the prize. RJ’s Sports Bar outlasted defending tournament champion All-American Domination in a two-game final on Sunday to win the men’s Danish Festival Softball Tournament.
From the opening ceremonies Thursday to the last scoop of ice cream handed out during the ice cream social Sunday, this year’s festival was celebrated with sunny skies, warm temperatures, thousands of visitors and countless activities that made for a “perfect” festival weekend.
Nearly seven years ago, the community of Hubbardston was shook to its core when one of its beloved residents, Bernita “Billie” Cunningham, was found dead in her home. After several years and much investigating, the case of her death finally came to an end in July 2011 when Texas native Justin Stephens was convicted of murdering the 80-year-old woman.

A Sand Lake man was cited for failing to report an accident and violating the basic speed law after his vehicle was discovered atop a mailbox post and road sign Sunday.
A 42-year-old Sheridan man was arrested Friday for reckless discharge of a firearm. Deputies with the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a firearm being discharged within a home in the 4000 block of S. Lund Road at approximately 2:13 p.m.
A 2-year-old child that fell from a second-story window Saturday is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.
