Greenville author publishes a series of DN column

GREENVILLE - Three years ago, Maureen Burns began scribbling down a weekly column, hoping to inspire, encourage or amuse readers of The Daily News.
Now her weekly "On My Mind" column is enjoyed by hundreds of readers every Saturday. Whether it's a piece on how hard it is to choose toothpaste, the need to count your blessings or reflections on a stressful day, Burns has captured her often humorous take on life in print.
More than 125 of those weekly columns have been collected in a bright colored book titled "Looking and Laughing at Life," recently released on Nov. 6 by Greystone Print Solutions of Greenville.
"Maureen has a gift of impacting all your emotions through her writing," said Rob Stafford, publisher of The Daily News. "Her new book is a wonderful collection of all her columns that have appeared on these pages (of The Daily News) for the past several years. The topics are wide ranging and depending on your mood, you're sure to find something that fits."
Burns said she has always toyed with the idea of collecting her columns into a book and many readers have encouraged her in the effort.
"I get response all the time from the community," Burns said. "I just think they can enjoy them (the columns). There are some to learn from, some to laugh about and people can relate most of them. There's such a variety of topics. They can laugh at them but they can relate to them."
She said writing the columns has allowed her to connect with community members in ways she never thought possible, all while enjoying her passion for writing.
"Sure, there are a couple of times that you have dead space between your ears," Burns said with a chuckle. "But usually something happens during the week. The mind is always working on it."
Burns is scheduled to appear at several locations to sign copies of her book and meet her readers (see infobox). The book is available for purchase for $12 at a number of locations (see infobox).
"I think it is a wonderful Christmas book," Burns said with a chuckle. "It's so nonthreatening - perfect for the bathroom."
