Orchids & Onions is an old newspaper term for handing out positive and negative feedback. The Daily News wants to give you, the readers, a chance to hand out your Orchids and Onions.

Click on Orchids or Onions at the top or bottom of this page to send your nomination. Inappropriate or slanderous remarks will not be posted.

EXAMPLE:
Orchid to my neighbor Troy for fixing my car while I was away for the weekend.

Onion to all the drivers out there who don't know how a four-way stop works.

YOUR SUBMISSIONS:

An onion for the people who send birthday party invitations to school and only invite 'selected' classmates. Do you realize that as your grandchild eagerly passes out invitations at school, that there may be a child excitedly waiting for the invitation that never comes? Did you think about how the 6 year old child must feel left out, and wonder why they did not get invited, or the hurt feelings caused from being ignored? Cedar Crest teachers, when asked, will give out home addresses in which you may mail your invitations.

A huge rotten onion to the elementary teacher @ cedar crest school here in Greenville, who denied my grand daughter who just turned 6,Denied her from passing out a few Birthday Inventations at the end of school. What in the world is wrong with people now a days? Gran'mom and myself 'papa' paid to rent the community center so our grand child could have a wonderfull Birthday party. When we asked if her friends where coming her eyes teared up and she said her teacher sent home a letter saying, we cant allow you to invite unless you invite the whole class! Come on it's a birthday party for petes sakes I feel this teacher " Need's a huge Rotten Onion" Along with the Greenville School Dist if this is their policy. Gramma and Papa

An orchid to all the wonderful volunteers of the Hubbardston Healthy Living Community Garden. Each and everyone of you deserve a heartfelt thank you for making this project such a success.

An orchid to the Flat River Community Library children's section. It is wonderful. Puppets, puzzles, books for all age levels and a listing of books on different subjects that parents might want to teach their child about.Kudos to the staff for making it such a wonderful FREE place to go!

An orchid to all of the people working hard to help the dogs in the Montcalm County Animal Shelter as the deal w/ R&R Research come to an end.

An onion to all the people who let their dogs "go" on the flat river trail and not pick it up!

An onion to a local FOOD establishment that told an employee who had the flu (vomiting and diarriah) that if he didn't show up to work he would be fired. He is the cook, too! Oh my goodness. Would you eat there if you knew the cook had the flu? Rotten onion to management!

A HUGE orchid to the city worker who took the extra time to plow my vehicle out of the snow last week at Walnut/Summit intersection. You prevented a bad situation from getting worse. Thank you!!!

An onion to all the private snowplowers who plow and leave the roads heaped with snow.

An orchid to the Greenville Car Center - won't go into details - but they are the most wonderful folks to work with when you have an accident with your vehicle. Wonderful, wonderful folks that own it and work there!

An orchid to all of you in the newsroom who will be working so hard tonight to bring us election news coverage as quickly as possible tomorrow. You will be in the midst of the frantic frenzy, and though it doesn't seem like it, you are blessed to be a part of it. Please note that I appreciate the hard work and dedication you bring to your jobs, especially when you have such long nights like you will tonight.

A sweet orchid to news editor Ryan Jeltema for making political and business stories so much easier to understand. Thanks, Ryan, for your help in getting through the tough subjects.

An orchid: I enjoy reading the blogs as they give us a personal side of each reporter, things that are happening in their own lives. It seems the paper is being filled more and more with news stories and less and less with the fun, enjoyable features that allow the writer to put more feeling into their work. I now get that personal, friendly touch that is missing from the actual paper from their blogs.I like the updated blog titles as the writers can freely give their opinions on all subjects, not just their beats. Keep up the good work, newsroom.

A large onion to the people who operate the sound (PA) equipment during the games at Black Field. It is deafening and can be heard for blocks!

An onion to those people who smoked while sitting in their spots watching the Danish Festival Parade. All those sitting around them had to suffer and anyone else downwind from them. Can't we make the parade a smoke free event? Also, some adults sat at the children's activities and smoked while waiting for their kids. Babies in strollers had to breathe in that second hand smoke. I'm furious!

An onion to all the pet owners that put their cats out with no thought to the damage that is done to neighbors' plants, cars, kids' sandboxes etc.

An orchid to the Meijer family who donated money for our wonderful Flat River Trail and new hospital wing. I enjoy a bike ride down the Flat River Trail every single day. Many people in our community share the joy of the trail. Thanks Fred and Lena for investing in our community.

An onion to the parents who let their kids swim and play around the Flat River without being supervised by an adult.

An orchid for the crews that did the work on Walnut and Fairplain's Avenue. Both of the sections of the roads that are done are wonderful. It was worth the inconvenience to have such nice roads. Thanks!

A bouquet of orchids to the people of Montcalm County to brighten their day and give inspiration of prosperity to the future!

An orchid of every color of the rainbow to Maureen Burns for writing so well about daily life and inspiring us to count our blessings. The recent article regarding perspective is timeless and deserves global recognition. You're the best, Maureen!

A huge orchid For our neighbor Mike for plowing us out this winter...you are an angel!!!!!!

An onion to all those drivers in the morning rush traffic, headed west out of town on M-57, who are in the right turn only lane approaching Greenville West Drive, then cut the rest of us off because they 'didn't realize' they were in a turn lane.

An onion to all parents who don't kiss their children goodbye BEFORE they are in the drop off lane @ the middle school

An orchid to those who volunteer at Baldwin Heights Elementary School. Your unpaid sacrificial help blesses the lives of students and teachers.

An onion to those who do not properly care for their pets in cold weather. It breaks my heart to see suffering pets on a chain with frozen water and not enough shelter to keep them warm.

A ROTTEN ONION to the thief who stole the Christmas gifts from under the tree at the church. I am holding back my words of what should happen to her besides paying back the cost of the gifts and community service! How about required church attendance? Maybe it would help improve her heart and mind! And I don't want to hear her sad story either. Like the pastor said, "All she needed to do was just come and ask for help." There are many organizations in town that will help people at this time of year.

An onion to Cental Montcalm Public Schools for changing the start time of the UE! Its a HUGE mess in the morning! What is it going to take for them to realize they made a huge mistake?

An orchid for all the kind people who have helped plow, shovel or snow blow their neighbors driveways and sidewalks. Our neighbor did that for us and it was so nice.

An orchid to the Greenville School Board whose wise decisions to hire John Gates as High School Principal and Pete Haines as Superintendent made for a smooth transition to the school year. They saved money and kept good people here in town!
