Redskins win Invite: The Redskins went to Breckenridge Saturday and beat two Tri-Valley Conference opponents by one run each for the title. Belding got a 7-6 win over the host Huskies followed by a 10-9, eight-inning win over Merrill. In the opener Rob VanDyke went all six innings for the win, striking out six. Kole Hart was 3-for-3 and Josh Moore was 2-for-2. Todd Haller added a two-run homer in the third inning. Against the Vandals Dylan Hunt drove in the game-winner with a single in the bottom of the eighth. That made a winner out of Seth Nelson, who pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief and struck out three. Along with the game-winning single, Hunt added a grand slam home run in the second inning – his first career homer – to the attack. Tyler Daller also had two hits. Record: 7-8-1. Greenville JV wins Lakeview tourney: The JV Yellow Jackets allowed only one hit in two games of the Lakeview JV Invitational Saturday, winning two games by the mercy rule in beating Reed City 15-0 and the host Wildcats 10-0. Max Little threw a no-hitter against the JV Coyotes, striking out seven in three innings. Nick Reamer and Seth Davis each had two hits and two runs scored in the game. Against Lakeview Reamer struck out seven and allowed only one hit for the win on the mound, then at the plate he was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Record: 12-1. Next: at home against Grand Rapids Christian Wednesday.
Montabella 19, Ashley 1: The Mustangs mercied the Bears in a Mid-State Activities Conference game Monday despite rain that postponed the second game. Emily Lint struck out five of the 12 batters she faced for the win. Melissa Allen and Taylor Hutson had two hits each for Montabella. Records: 6-16 and 4-5. Next: at home against Vestaburg Thursday.
Belding shoots 195: The Redskins shot 195 at Cedar Chase Golf Course on Monday in an O-K Blue Jamboree. GR West Catholic shot 158 to win the tournament. Sparta was second with 170 and Comstock Park third with 173. Cody Christensen led the Redskins with 45. Conor Wisman and Dillon Riches shot 49 while Bryce Johnson fired a 52. Next: at Candlestone on Wednesday for an O-K Blue Jamboree.
