Greenville downs Cedar Springs twice: The Yellow Jackets struck out a total of 27 batters in a doubleheader win over the Red Hawks Wednesday, winning by scores of 7-0 and 8-4. Parker Syrjala threw the shutout in the opener, allowing four hits and striking out 14 while giving up three walks. Tyler Orr, Tre Nelson, Brad Gilbert and Stephen Oliver had two hits each in the game. Travis Groom threw all seven innings of the second game and allowed four hits, fanning 13. Syrjala had two hits and three RBIs and Orr, Oliver and Jacob Crittenden had two hits each. Record: 12-12. Next: at home vs. Lakeview Wednesday.
Tri County wins two: The Vikings were big winners over Morley Stanwood Wednesday, winning games of 10-3 and 12-2, with the latter in only five innings. Cody Smits got the win in the first game, as he went the distance and allowed five hits and five walks, striking out three. Dustin Ruppert had three hits and five RBIs and Sam Nagy added two hits for Tri County. The second game was won by Cody Gross, who allowed three hits and two walks, striking out three. Martin Gould had four hits and four RBIs and Tyler Burns and Cody Mitz added two hits each to the attack. Record: 17-16. Next: at home against Newaygo Friday to continue a suspended game with the Lions leading 4-0 and Tri County batting in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out.
Montabella drops two: The Mustangs were beat in both ends of a doubleheader by the Saranac Redskins Wednesday, losing by scores of 13-3 in six innings and 11-5. Emily Lint was hit with the loss in the opener, allowing 10 hits, striking out seven and walking five. Kayla LaCroix had two hits for Montabella. Cheyann Frasle was the losing pitcher in the second game, which saw six different Mustangs get one hit. Record: 6-28. Next: at Ashley for a makeup game Friday.
Tri County 2, Lakeview 1: The Vikings got two goals from Elise Ketelaar to beat the Wildcats in a non-conference game Wednesday. Ally Reed got Lakeview’s only goal off an assist from Cecilia Bayne. Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle Grant made 10 saves in the loss. Record: Lakeview is 9-6-3. Next: Lakeview hosts a district game against Grant Tuesday, Tri County is at Big Rapids Friday.
Butternut wins at Edmore: The Butternut Homeschoolers won a quadrangular match at the Links of Edmore Wednesday, shooting a team score of 159. Breckenridge shot a 185 and Montabella shot 196. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart was there with two golfers. Isaiah Wyman was Butternut’s low scorer with a 38, followed by Caleb Wyman and Samuel Gehrke with 40s and David Crouse with a 41. Montabella got a 47 from Austin Garner, a 48 from Michael Hyde, a 49 from Austin Huber and a 52 from Trent Sabin. Next: Montabella is at Alma May 31 for team districts.
