Softball

CC-Crystal mercies Ashley twice: The Eagles outscored the Bears 37-1 in a total of six innings Thursday in beating Ashley 15-0 in game one and 22-1 in game two. The Eagles got a no-hitter from pitcher Katie Wilcox in the first game, being denied a perfect game by two errors. She struck out one batter. Kali Donahue was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Hailey Shinabarger and Raelynne Ferguson hade two hits each as CC-Crystal knocked out 13 hits. The Eagles were walked 10 times in the second game, also won by Wilcox. She allowed one hit and struck out three. Wilcox, Donahue and Ferguson each had two hits in the second game. Record: 14-19: Next: at home Monday against Fowler.

Belding 11, GR Forest Hills Northern 1: The Redskins won their 11th consecutive game Thursday in the final O-K Blue Conference game of the season. Kyleigh Linebaugh pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 10 without a walk. Mindy Reminga had three hits and three RBIs and Mariah Heintzelman, Caitlin Alkire and Morgan Hill added two hits each in the rout. Records: 20-10 and 14-4. Next: at Lakeview on Monday.

GR Christian 15, Greenville 6: They Yellow Jackets gave up a ton of walks in losing to the Eagles in an O-K White Conference game Thursday. Sarah Newhouse was the losing pitcher, pitching in three different innings totaling 2 2/3 innings. She allowed five hits and five walks with a strikeout. The only Greenville player to have two hits was Harleigh Lewis, who had two of the six Jacket hits. Records: 13-17 and 4-6. Next: at GR Kenowa Hills tournament Saturday.

MPSH drops Montabella: The Mustangs were mercied in both games against the Irish Thursday in MSAC action, losing 15-1 in five innings and 12-2 in six innings. Emily Lint took the loss in game one, scattering nine hits and six walks. Kayla LaCroix, Allie Ball and Taylor Smith had the only hits for Montabella. Cheyann Frasle was hit with the loss in the second game, as she gave up 12 hits and walked four. Sarah Ranney had two of the five Mustang hits, with LaCroix, Melissa Allen and Taylor Hutson having the others. Records: 6-24 and 4-9. Next: at Saranac Wednesday.

Lakeview 1-1 vs. Lions: The Wildcats split a doubleheader with Newaygo Thursday, losing the first game 14-9 but winning the second 6-1. Erin Vanderzand allowed 16 hits and four walks to take the loss for Lakeview in the opener. Andrea Henry and Estelle Molitor had four hits each and Keelie Outman added two for the Wildcats. Sadie Massey got the win in the second game, allowing five hits and four walks while striking out three. Seven different hitters for Lakeview each had a single hit. Record: 16-13. Next: at home Monday against Belding.

Baseball

CC-Crystal doubles up Ashley: The Eagles won a pair of games against the Bears Thursday, winning 18-6 in six innings and 11-0 in five innings in Ashley. Aaron Haines got the win in relief of Jeremy Schneider in the first game, as Haines went the final 4 2-3 innings and allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Spencer Harwood was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, Jack Powers was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Hunter Clark and Garner Cusack had two hits each. The second game was won by Cusack, who threw a complete-game one-hitter, fanning six. He also had two hits in the game as did Clark. Record: 12-15. Next: at home against Belding today.

MPSH shuts down Montabella: The Mustangs managed only a total of three hits in two games against the Irish Thursday in losses of 8-0 and 9-0. Nate Bandfield took the loss in both games. In the first game he allowed five hits and walked five striking out seven to surpass 100 strikeouts for the year. Travis Sabin and Brady Burggren had the only Montabella hits. Drew Nemeth had the only hit of the game, and it broke up a perfect game attempt on the 21st batter. Records: 9-14-2 and 5-8. Next: at home against Vestaburg on Monday.

Baseball

Greenville 17, GR Creston 4: The Yellow Jackets completed the season sweep of the Polar Bears with the victory on Thursday. Tyler Orr led the Greenville offensive attack with four hits and two runs. Tre Nelson added three hits, one run and RBI. Parker Syrjala added two hits and three RBIs while Jake Crittenden had two hits and one run. Orr earned the win. In seven innings, he allowed five hits, three earned runs, two walks and 11 strikeouts. Records: 4-5 (3-3). Next: at GR Christian Tuesday for a doubleheader.

Montabella falls twice: Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart got the better of the Mustangs twice on Thursday. The Irish won game one 7-1 and game two 12-2 in five innings. Nate Bandfield suffered the loss in both games. In game one, Travis Sabin had a hit and Travis Dunn scored a run. In game two, Bandfield and Nate Jankowsky each had hits. Records: 4-10-1 (3-4). Next: at Ashley on Monday. A doubleheader will take place after the two teams resume a game tied at 5 in the bottom of the fifth.

Softball

Vestaburg still undefeated: The Wolverines won a couple of easy games on Thursday over the Coleman Comets. Vestaburg won game one 10-3 and game two 12-2 in five innings. Kayla Dill and Jannelle Rons earned the wins. Records: 12-0 (8-0). Next: at home against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart Monday.
CC-C splits: The Eagles split with Pewamo-Westphalia in CMAC play on Thursday. The Eagles won game one 6-3. Mackenzie Geister earned the win. She went seven innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Micala Decker, Hailey Shinabarger, Katie Wilcox, Meriah Gallagher and Geister each had one hit. Game two went to the Pirates 9-1. Wilcox suffered the loss. She allowed five hits and six walks with three strikeouts. Decker, Shinabarger, Wilcox, Gallagher and Geister again each had one hit. Records: 5-9 (3-7). Next: at Byron Invitational Saturday.

Coopersville 3, Belding 2: The Redskins lost by a run in an O-K Blue matchup with the Broncos on Thursday. Kyleigh Linebaugh suffered the loss. In seven innings, she allowed four hits with five strikeouts. Makayla Boss, Meriah Heintzelman, Morgan Hill, Mindy Reminga and Linebaugh each had one hit. Record: 8-9 (6-3). Next: at Cedar Springs Tuesday.

Montabella 0-2: Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart mercied the Mustangs in both games on Thursday by scores of 15-0 and 13-0. In game one, Cheyann Frasle (2-4) suffered the loss. East Grand Rapids 6, Greenville 5: The Yellow Jackets lost in the eighth inning when the Pioneers executed a suicide squeeze play for the winning run. That made a loser out of relief pitcher Brad Gilbert, who didn’t allow a hit but walked two in one inning of work. Parker Syrjala, Tyler Orr, Tre Nelson and Stephen Oliver had two hits each for Greenville as they had 12 hits. Records: 1-5 and 0-3. Next game: at Tri County today.

Tri County 16, Lakeview 1: The Vikings mercied the Wildcats in five innings Thursday. Kyler Ridgeway took the loss after allowing nine hits and four walks in four innings, striking out four. Ridgeway, Joey Cole, Cory Hamlin and Damien Beckett had the only Lakeview hits of the game. Records: Lakeview is 2-3, Tri County is 0-0. Next games: Lakeview is at Clare today, Tri County is at home against Greenville today.

Fowler 11, CC-Crystal 5: The two teams named Eagles tried to play two games Thursday but only one is official, and that was Fowler’s opening game win. Nate LaVictor took the loss for CC-Crystal, as he allowed five hits and two walks while striking out two in three innings. Mitch Wesley was 5-for-5 with three stolen bases in the game, Lucas Ratu added three hits and two RBIs and LaVictor was 2-for-3. The second game was called on account of darkness after six innings with the two teams tied at eight. The game will be picked up from that point at a later date. Records: 4-4-1 and 1-4-1. Next games: at the Potterville tournament Saturday.

Greenville JV wins two: The JV Yellow Jackets won a pair of games against East Grand Rapids Wednesday, winning 12-10 and 6-3. Kaleb Vinton was credited with the win in both games. In the second game he scattered four hits and struck out four. Max Little and Bryan Edwards had three hits each in the opener, and Peter Januzelli and Ethan Morris had an RBI each in the second game. Record: 7-1. Next game: at home against Tri County today.

Softball

Tri County 2, Lakeview 0: The Vikings only had three hits against the Wildcats Thursday, but they scored and Lakeview didn’t. Kayla Voss allowed only five hits to get the win on the mound for Tri County, while Erin Vanderzand was the losing pitcher despite just three hits and two walks allowed, striking out five. Sam Kidder, Kaylee Hackbardt and Dani Longoria had the three Viking hits. Liz Nielsen had two hits, Estelle Molitor, Sadie Massey and Vanderzand had the other hits for Lakeview. Records: Lakeview is 6-3, Tri County is unknown. Next games: Lakeview is at Clare today, Tri County is home against Greenville.

Vestaburg no-hits Ashley twice: The Wolverines remained undefeated in the 2012 season by throwing a pair of no-hitters against the Bears Thursday by scores of 16-0 and 21-0, both in three innings. Kayla Dill and Janelle Rons had the no-hitters for Vestaburg. Tonya Gates had three nits and three RBIs in the opener, and Rons added four hits and four runs in the second game, while Jackie Gostomski had three hits and three RBIs. Records: 8-0 and 6-0. CC-Crystal splits with Fowler: CC-Crystal and Fowler each took turns mercying the other “Eagles” Thursday. The Fowler Eagles won the first game 12-2 in six innings while the CC-Crystal Eagles won the nightcap 16-4 in five innings. Katie Wilcox was tagged with the loss in the opener as she gave up eight hits and five walks against two strikeouts. Mackenzie Geister, Meriah Gallagher, Hailey Shinabarger and Sarah Bratcher had the hits for CC-Crystal. In the second game Geister allowed only six hits and a walk in the win. Wilcox and Shinabarger had two hits each in the win. Records: 4-2 and 2-2. Next games: at the Potterville tournament Saturday.

Montabella mercied twice: The Mustangs fell to the Farwell Eagles by scores of 17-0 in four innings and 11-1 in six innings Thursday. Emily Lint was the losing pitcher in the opener, giving up only four earned runs. Montabella had hits from Cheyann Frasle, Mariah Davidson and Taylor Hutson. In the nightcap Frasle allowed one earned run on three hits and four walks. Frasle, Davidson, Allie Ball and Taylor Smith had the Mustangs’ hits in the game. Record: 4-11. Next games: at the Fulton Invitational Saturday.

Golf

Greenville fifth at pre-conference: The Yellow Jackets were fifth of the six O-K White Conference teams at Thornapple Pointe on Thursday, shooting a team score of 346. East Grand Rapids was the winner with a 316 score, followed by Grand Rapids Christian at 322. Greenville’s scorers were Dylan Bernth with an 82, Brady McNeill with an 83, Jake Visch with an 89 and Alex Karatkiewicz with a 92. Next meet: at home Monday against Lowell and Northview.

Central second at Chippewa Hills: The Green Hornets were second in the red division at the Chippewa Hills Match Play tournament Thursday, scoring 36 points. That was one point behind Cedar Springs and one point ahead of Sparta. Jared Cilibraise was 2-1 in the meet, as was Ben Gladding. Tyler Sleet, however, won all three of his matches. Next meet: at home against Shepherd today.
Lakeview fifth at Chip Hills: The Wildcats ended up fifth in the blue division of the Chippewa Hills Match Play, as Brock Kanouse won all three of his matches, Kameron Gilbert was 2-1 as was Jon Wandel. Next meet: at Chippewa Hills for a CSAA jamboree Tuesday.

Montabella struggles at Chippewa Hills: The Mustangs had only 14 points as a team in the blue division at the Chippewa Hills Match Play tournament Thursday, as only sophomore Dakota Lobert won two of his three matches. Next meet: at Fulton Wednesday.

Boys track

Greenville 93, Creston 44: The Yellow Jackets won their first dual meet of the season with a win over the Polar Bears Thursday. Leading Greenville was Luke Wilson and Kyle Swindell with three firsts each. Wilson won the long jump (18-7), the high jump (5-6) and was a member of the winning 800-meter relay team (1:35.94). Swindell was a member of the winning 3,200-meter relay team (9:15.45) and the 1,600-meter relay team (3:47.84) and won the 800 (2:15.41). Records: 1-3 and 1-1. Next meet: at Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday.

Girls track

Greenville 116 ¾, Creston 19 ¼: The Yellow Jackets remained undefeated with a win over the Polar Bears Thursday. Rosalyn Wyse had four firsts, tying for first in the high jump (4-6), winning the 300-meter hurdles (48.45) and being a member of the winning 400-meter relay (1:51.91) and 1,600-meter relay teams (4:26.3). Bailey Parmelee also had four firsts, winning the long jump (15-8 ½), the 1,600 (5:12.00), the 800 (2:27.95) and the 3,200 (11:27.46). Records: 4-0 and 2-0. Next meet: at Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Northview 53, Greenville 34: The Yellow Jackets trailed but just three points at halftime, but the Wildcats outscored the Yellow Jackets 26-11 in the second half for the win on Saturday in the regular season finale. Mackenzy Nichols and Britta Bernth led Greenville with eight points. Leah Somerfield and Katie Dunham each had six points. Records: 11-9, 3-7. Next game: against Rockford on Monday at Northview for districts.

Vestaburg 62, Ashley 35: The Wolverines closed out their regular season with an MSAC win over the Bears Saturday. Emma Schuch led Vestaburg with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Taylor Darmody chipped in 12 points. Records: 10-9 and 4-4. Next game: at home Monday against St. Louis in the Class C district tournament.

Reed City 55, Lakeview 51: The Wildcats lost their final game of the regular season to the Coyotes Saturday afternoon. Leading Lakeview was Andrea Henry with 16 points and Megan Leach with 15. Records: 13-7 and 8-6. Next game: at Tri County Monday against Chippewa Hills in the Class B district tournament.

Reed City 78, Lakeview 45: The Wildcats ended the CSAA portion of their schedule with a home loss to the Coyotes Saturday afternoon. Shawn Lindsey led Lakeview with 18 points followed by Brad Root with 10. Records: 7-13 and 6-10. Next game: at Grant Tuesday.

Fowler 56, CC-Crystal 50: The Eagles lost to the “other” Eagles in a CMAC game Friday night. Maxx Jolls had 20 points and Brann Schmitt added 13 more for CC-Crystal. Records: 10-8 and 8-8. Next game: at Potterville Tuesday.

Morley-Stanwood 66, Central Montcalm 53: The Green Hornets finished fifth in the CSAA after losing to the Mohawks in the final conference game Friday night. Will Plavan led Central with nine and Forest Bartz added eight more. Records: 7-12 and 7-9. Next game: at home against Vestaburg Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Belding 54, Coopersville 38: The Redskins used a 16-7 first quarter to jump on the Broncos in an O-K Blue Conference game Friday night. Stefanie Harig led Belding with 19 points and McKenzie Breimayer added 16 in the win. Records: 6-14 and 3-9. Next game: at Tri County Monday for the Class B district tournament against the host Vikings.

Morley-Stanwood 73, Central Montcalm 32: The Green Hornets were the final victim of the Mohawks, who finished the season with a perfect 20-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Class C poll. Michaela Crooks was Central’s top scorer with nine points. Records: 7-13 and 6-10. Next game: at Tri County Wednesday for the Class B district tournament.

Morley-Stanwood 61, Lakeview 51: The Wildcats saw their four-game losing streak snapped at home by the Mohawks Friday night. Brent Leach scored 17 points and Shawn Lindsey and Brad Root added 12 points each. Quote: “We led 28-14 after one quarter. They (Morley-Stanwood) turned it up and we didn’t match it.” – Lakeview coach Mike Schreiber. Records: 7-10 and 6-8. Next game: at home against Big Rapids Tuesday.

CC-Crystal 49, Saranac 46: The Eagles led 32-20 after three quarters but had to withstand a furious rally by the Redskins to win this CMAC game Friday night. Mitchell Schneider led CC-Crystal with 13, Isaac Torres added 12 and Brann Schmitt added 11. Quote: “The third quarter we put a lot of pressure on and they (Saranac) scored two points. Schmitt and Schneider combined for 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.” – CC-Crystal coach Ryan Fritz. Records: 10-6 and 8-6. Next game: at home against Laingsburg Wednesday.

Central Montcalm 48, Holton 43: The Green Hornets kept the Red Devils at just one win this season after a CSAA win Friday night. Alex Maxted led Central with 15 points and Jared Cilibraise added 10 for the Hornets. Records: 6-11 and 6-8. Next game: at home against Chippewa Hills Tuesday.

Tri County 52, Newaygo 47: The Vikings picked up a win in their last game against the Lions in the Lakes 8 Conference, as the Lions move to the CSAA next year. Geneva Keech led four Vikings in scoring with 32 and Alexis Firovich scored 16 more for 48 of the 52 Tri County points. Next game: at Ludington next Friday.

Central Montcalm 64, Holton 48: The Green Hornets outscored the Red Devils 25-5 in the third quarter to break open the game and beat Holton in a CSAA game Friday night. Kortney McKeown scored 15 and Karli Clark added 10 for Central. Quote: “The third quarter was the difference. The girls came out at halftime and executed well.” – Central coach Marty James. Records: 7-11 and 6-8. Next game: at home against Chippewa Hills Tuesday.

St. Johns Homeschoolers 63, Butternut Homeschoolers 47: For the second time this season, Butternut lost to St. Johns, this time Tuesday night. St. Johns jumped out to a 22-3 first-quarter lead and cruised from there. David Crouse and Caleb Wyman had 15 points for Butternut and Josh Snyder added 13 more. Quote: “The boys never gave up and we actually had them (St. Johns) nervous in the fourth (quarter). They have won our state tournament four years in a row and have a really strong team this year.” – Butternut coach Steve Crouse. Record: 6-2. Next game: n/a.

Greenville freshmen win at Cornerstone: The Yellow Jackets took home the freshman girls title at the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament with wins over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern 39-13 Monday and Jenison 28-13 Wednesday. Sarah Ritz scored eight points to lead Greenville against Forest Hills Eastern and tournament MVP Carlie Bradford led Greenville with six against Jenison. Record: 6-0.
