Mercantile Bank donates Main Street building to Ionia Community Library

The white two-story building with a temple front and limestone columns at the corner of Main and Depot streets is a downtown Ionia landmark. Originally erected in 1873 as the Second National Bank of Ionia, it has been rebuilt, reconfigured, renovated and reopened as two other banks, a J.C. Penney, attorneys’ offices and, most recently, a branch of Mercantile Bank.

The building’s next incarnation could be as the Ionia Community Library.
